Out with the Old & in with the New
Heading north of the country towards Druminia located outside Virginia in Co. Cavan we speak to farmer John Pat Lynch about his fleet of machinery and how he felt the 2008 season went for him.
John Pat does all his own mowing, baling and wrapping and states “the atrocious weather conditions put every farmer in the land under pressure.” A huge back log of work was created due to the heavy rainfall, “I’m normally finished all my baling by August but heading into September, there was no sign of the rain stopping up to allow me finish up”, comments John Pat who also runs a dairy herd of 50 cows on 100 acres.
He purchased a Lely Welger 235 Master in May 2008 from recently appointed dealer Matty Reilly in Ballyjamesduff. Previous to that he had a Lely Welger RP 200 and got a whole 10 seasons work out of it, “now there’s a reliable machine” adds John Pat. He notes that the new 235 baler is far superior from his previous model as it’s gives him more choice with a wider pick-up, 13 knives, higher density bales and more accessibility for maintenance with functional guarding.
He is very happy with the back-up from his dealer Matty Reilly who guarantees a reliable service.
John Pat has also upgraded his old Lely Optimo Mower to a Lely Splendimo 240 MC and describes the Splendimo as “a far better job.” He goes on to say the mounted mower has a far better bed for cutting and is solid behind his Massey Ferguson tractor due to its robust build. Lely disc mowers are fitted with a modular shaft drive cutterbar which results in lower power requirements and maintenance costs, as well as reducing fuel consumption. John Pat concludes by saying “the changing of knives is now a more enjoyable task with the “Clip” system”.
