Installation of a milking robot in an existing cow housing = huge saving of space!
Currently, a lot of dairy farmers are struggling with overcrowded cow housings. This is not an easy problem, even more so because building a new cow housing is very expensive... Then again, in many cases the proper solution is just as simple as it is cost-positive and effective: the installation of a milking robot in the existing cow housing. Practice has proven that this immediately gives a tremendous benefit in terms of the number of cubicles.
Based upon the installation of an Astronaut milking robot in an existing cow housing compared with a traditional milking parlour, we have worked out the following example.
Existing situation: 3 + 1 row stable with a 2 x 6 herringbone parlour, 59 cubicles + 2 concentrate feeding stations.
Situation after the installation of the milking robot: 71 cubicles + 1 concentrate feeding station. One concentrate feeding station can be left out, because the robot dispenses concentrates.
Nett gain: 12 cubicles. A price of 4.500,- euro per cubicles should be allowed compared with the extension of the existing cow housing or building a new one. In other words: 12 x4.500,- =54.000,- euro.
Within this new construction, the dairy farmer can house a larger number of cows in his existing housing whilst, in addition, the number of cubicles is perfectly suited to optimum utilisation of the capacity of the milking robot. Apart from the direct benefit of a larger number of cubicles, the Astronaut milking robot offers today's dairy farmer many advantages in terms of cattle management, milk production and milk quality, hygiene, animal wellbeing and- last but not least- flexibility in organising his work and time.
