Jackie Monckton about the Lely Calm calf feeder

"And there's more ... a lot more" claims Jackie Monckton

"And there's more ... a lot more" claims Jackie Monckton"

As a farmer's wife, mother of two children and an equal partner, I had a million and one things to do every day with little time to bucket feed and look after 35-40 calves twice a day." Hill Farm, Nantwich is a contract-farmed enterprise with Jackie and husband Martin running a 225 cow Pedigree Holstein dairy herd with 186 in milk. Calving is all-year-round with regular calf additions every couple of days. Calf replacement is very important to the future success of the herd as healthier calves are seen as healthier heifers, and Jackie and Martin aim to keep all of their heifers for their own herd.

Jackie had looked at automatic calf rearing units but the ones viewed appeared to be too complicated. During a visit to a joint LELY - NWF open day, Jackie was so impressed with the system set-up, she was soon convinced that the LELY CALM calf would satisfy her requirements. Since day one of Jackie's LELY CALM calf unit being installed, it has delivered all that both companies said it would.

10 hours a week saved

The first week the LELY CALM calf unit was in operation, Jackie estimated that it saved her 10 hours of work - providing her with an extra 2 hours each day 5 days a week.

"Now," Jackie says "I am not running myself ragged any more. The unit is easy to clean and the calves love it !"
