The current facility is being doubled in size in response to the continuing growth of business activities, and will comprise three wings of office space covering a total area of 8,159 m2, and a factory covering an area of 21,009 m2 in total. The new facility is expected to be completed in Q1 2022. Sustainability is of paramount importance, so the farming innovator is striving to equal the current building and again achieve ‘BREEAM outstanding’ certification.
1,000th foundation pile
This 1,000th foundation pile is an important landmark in the construction of the new building. Some of Lely’s 1,000 employees in Maassluis will be stationed here, and thousands of products will be exported to dairy farmers worldwide every year. There are still another 1,000 other solutions waiting to be invented to make sure the dairy farming sector has an enjoyable, profitable and sustainable future, while also helping meeting the global demand for food.
BREEAM certification
“Lely’s pursuit of 'BREEAM outstanding' certification for the new construction reflects the sustainability that is embedded into all the company’s activities,” says André van Troost, CEO Lely. “The health of employees, the environment and choice of materials are all being taken into account. For example, a fitness room is being built, and an optimal working climate is being created. The design also includes a seasonal thermal energy storage installation and solar panels to generate energy, while water and waste will be recycled and CO2 emissions reduced.” The energy performance (EPC) is extremely efficient; lower than 0. This is partly due to the installation of approximately 6,000 m² of solar panels. The contractor is also striving to work with suppliers who share the same sustainable objectives, and 80% of the recyclable materials from the construction site are being reused.
Schedule
The demolition of the old factory buildings began in June 2019. Following soil remediation and preparation for construction, pile driving started in July 2020. Pile driving will continue until late October, when work on the rest of the building will begin. The new Lely Campus phase 2 is scheduled to be completed in Q1 2022.
Partners
Lely is working with several long-term partners on the new construction, mostly from the region. ConverseArchitects was hired for the design, and Dura Vermeer was selected as contractor. Both were also involved in phase 1.
Growth
The Lely Campus in Maassluis, where the head office and factory are located, was opened in 2014. After the sale of the forage activities in 2017, Lely has been focussing entirely on developing robots for dairy farming, in areas such as milking robots, feed pushers and big data to collect and process information to help the farmer run his or her farm.
