What is your role?

The Discovery Collector is an Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) in the Lely portfolio. It is a robot that automatically collects cow manure and dumps it in a collection point. The market for Discovery Collector AGV is growing fast. With this, the available logdata has also increased. These should be used to expose and explain certain behavior or failures. One of this behaviors is asymmetric loads on the left and right driving motors although driving straight. Failure of function occurs when the asymmetry exceeds the max capacity of the machine. At this stage it is not known what the underlying root cause is for this asymmetric driving.

In this assignment, you are going to conduct analyses and tests to find out what is the root cause of asymmetric loads on drive motors during free straight driving. What are the current symptoms in different farms and is there a common pattern? Is there a correlation with other route actions, like driving along walls or with hardware wear like uneven wear of tyres or scrapers? At the end you will propose a hardware or software solution and if applicable, propose a solution for predictive maintenance.

Your main activities will include:

  • Analyzing the Discovery Collector and the studies performed up to now;
  • Analyze data from machines at test farms;
  • Apply structured root cause analysis strategy to determine underlying mechanisms and define follow up questions (In Lely we use the Shainin method (red-X) and documentation of the method is available);
  • Design and perform lab experiments with the actual AGV to test hypothesis.

What is your experience?

We expect you to bring expertise of data analysis and mechanical engineering. Data analysis is required to analyze the behavior of asymmetric driving and mechanical engineering knowledge is needed to model the relation between the logged data and the physical processes that underlie it.

  • Currently studying a Bachelor or Master in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering or similar;
  • Knowledge of Data analysis, Python, Motion control, Tinkering;
  • Verbal and written English communication skills, German would be a plus.
