Dedicated Farm Management training for veterinarians

Feed advisors, veterinarians and Lely Farm Management Advisors - we all have our specialised fields but with a common target: to help our farmers move forward. Combining and sharing knowledge is one of the key elements. For this reason, Lely Farm Management Support has developed dedicated training for veterinarians in order for them to become more familiar with our management systems and data interpretation.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The first kick-off was done at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Utrecht (The Netherlands). Six enthusiastic students joined in with a full week dedicated to robotic milking. Various speakers, such as Henk Hogeveen, Wilma Steeneveld and Erwin de Heer (ULP), taught the students about scientific research connected to economics, sensors and attention lists.

Under the supervision of Anneke Gouw, Milking and Cooling Specialist from Lely Farm Management Support, the whole group visited a farm and was taught by Anneke about our philosophy and management system. They discovered where specific information is to be found and how to gain more insight into the milking process. Finally, the students visited other farms and got the chance to use their new knowledge in practice.

Veterinary student: ‘Robotic milking is the future; it is very good to learn all the ins and outs.’

Training at a veterinary practice

At the beginning of March, the first official training at a veterinary practice took place in the northern part of The Netherlands, together with the LSO Netherlands and the local Lely Center Heerenveen. Over two days, the veterinarians became familiar with our principles, (daily) routines and management systems, in theory but also in practice. Due to the enthusiasm and number of interested veterinarians, the next training session in The Netherlands is already planned for June this year.

Working together

Perhaps one of the most important lessons learned was the fear of data being reduced. Now, according to one of the veterinarians, they are more familiar with this. The same applies to the basic principles of hygiene and the initial interpretation of reports. Secondly, the possibility of learning from each other, veterinarians from Lely Farm Management Support and vice versa, was explored. Cooperation between Lely Farm Management, veterinarians and feed advisors simply benefits our farmers.

Accreditation

Local accreditation is a very important step in getting this training onto veterinarians’ agendas. Lely International will provide full support in this.
