What is smart feeding and how does the Vector work?

Smart feeding is a concept that encompasses not only the feed that is put in front of the cow but the environment that the cow is in, incorporating a Lely manure robot to ensure all passageways are  always clean, with adequate access to clean water, bedding and correct lighting. Putting the cow first to empower her to decide what she wants to do when.  The Lely Vector system will create a specific ration, ensure it is properly mixed and then distribute it to the cows, when they need it. The Vector feeds to need rather than on a timed system often seen on other robotic feeding solutions. Vector does this by using a laser to measure the quantity of feed at the feed fence, if the feed height falls below a set parameter (set by you the farmer) the vector system will produce a ration for that area of the feed fence. This means if the weather changes and the U.K. has a heat wave, a cows feed intake will drop, or on the opposite if we experience a cold snap a cows dry matter intake increases, the  Vector system will take this into account meaning you are not wasting feed that is not required by your herd. The Vector system is made up of two main parts, the first is the Kitchen, this is where your ration ingredients are stored, the size of your kitchen varies on each farm to give you the flexibility to adjust the contents of your rations. At Lely we try and design the capacity of the kitchen to enable you to fill it every three days, meaning one less job over the weekend.  The kitchen uses a crane to select each ingredient of your ration to  load it in to the Mixing and feeding robot (MFR)  the kitchen can also use augers to add ingredients such as blends and minerals to a ration. The MFR then mixes the ration correctly and heads out to feed the cows. The MFR travels around the farm following metal strips to the shed, once in the shed it uses ultrasound to navigate down the feed fence, whilst it travels down the feed fence the Vectors skirt pushes up any existing feed and then measures the height of the feed to determine if any more is required, it will complete this process for every feed fence on its route. When it reaches the feed fence that requires more it will distribute the ration evenly before completing its route and returning back to the kitchen to charge and refill with the next ration required. This process is repeated throughout the day and night ensuring the cows have enough feed that is pushed up where they can access it day and night, allowing you to concentrate on other areas of your dairy business.
