Consumers want: local, direct, fresh, tasty, transparent, animal-friendly

“When it comes to dairy products, consumers want local proximity, short distances, absolute freshness, good taste, transparency and consideration for animals and people. It is precisely these wishes that a dairy farmer can fulfil with our Lely Orbiter. In doing so, the farmer builds up his own marketing of his individual performance as a dairy farmer and more self-determined independence as an entrepreneur," says Norbert van Hemert, Managing Director Lely, Northern, Central, Eastern Europe.

The Lely Orbiter in the Netherlands has gained experience in the past years with the first-generation of Lely Orbiter. In the next step, it will be commissioned in Germany together with a Lely farmer as an innovative pilot project in spring 2023. "Our on-farm dairy processor is suitable for enterprising, forward-looking farmers. Certain technical and other requirements have to be met in order to set up our system, such as milking with our Lely Astronaut milking robots," adds Sergio Ooijens, Head of Lely Processing. "For us, the Orbiter is a great innovation in many respects. On the one hand, of course, technically, because so much know-how is involved. But also about the value chain. For the first time, we are reaching all the way to the consumer. That creates a lot of transparency, which is particularly important these days."

Dairy product diversity

“This Lely Orbiter has it all,” says Sergio Ooijens. "From our Lely Astronaut milking robot, the milk flows in a closed system into the Orbiter and finally into the milk bottle, as whole milk or low-fat milk. We can homogenize, pasteurize and separate. All with a minimum shelf life of 14 days." In addition, this second generation produces yoghurt. The processing and filling of dairy has been fully automated.

Compact space in only two containers and just as much more transparency, are highlights of the new Lely Orbiter. The Orbiter comes with plexiglass doors and inner walls so that there is a direct view into the production unit. The Lely Orbiter dairy products are tasty and fresh, because the freshly milked milk is processed and bottled within 24 hours.

Technology that inspires

The Lely Orbiter technology promises working pleasure from milking to the milk bottle. For the second generation, the entire production technology has been further refined and fully automated, from the milk tank to the finished labelled milk bottle. In addition, the management software is more efficient and user-friendly. This results in less work for the dairy farmer and the process is easier to control. Another benefit is remote maintenance: technical problems can be solved remotely. This saves time and guarantees process stability - both important factors in the daily work.
