About Farm Management Support

Farm Management Support (FMS) has a single goal: to help you improve the production and profitability of your dairy operation. Regardless of whether you are just about to make the transition to automatic milking and/or feeding, or you have been using our products and management systems on your farm for a while, you receive guidance before, during and after you get started. For more experienced users, we help you optimize the management of your farm. For example, we can analyze your daily routines with your cows, work and management systems, and offer ways to run more efficiently.

With this guidance and support, we help you to achieve a sustainable, profitable and enjoyable future for your dairy farm.

Our barn concept

Free cow traffic

Our barn concept is based on the principle of free cow traffic. Cows decide when they want to eat, drink, lie down or be milked, without any interruption or obstacles.

Free cow traffic influences day-to-day management, the feeding strategy and the design of the barn. The location of the milking system, the feed kitchen, other barn products and your day-to-day routines are all important for achieving efficient free cow traffic.

Our support

In 3 phases

We provide guidance to all of our customers when it comes to making the transition to automatic milking and/or feeding. We also help you prepare for this new way of working in three phases.

Start-up

Before and during start-up, we will guide you with our knowledge, experience and expertise. Our teams have more than 20 years of experience with customers all over the world.

All of our know-how is collated in the Lely RoadBook. This is a digital protocol that describes the entire preparatory phase up to the actual point of start-up.

This is a proven concept, and is the same for all new customers regardless of location. It is based on experience and feedback from dairy farmers who have already made the transition. It is also how we ensure that everyone receives the same information, on any subject, ranging from preparing the cows and new routines, to using the management system.

We talk to you and your feed advisor to agree on the rations for automatic milking, and discuss what is and is not needed on your farm. We also involve your veterinarian, dairy processor and breeders. We do everything that is needed to achieve a smooth start.

Support in 3 phases

During start-up

The Lely Technical Service Support (TSS) team members install the machines. TSS technicians ensure that each machine is properly fitted so you know it is working correctly right from the start. We guide the cows the first time they go to the automatic milking system to ease them into the new way of being milked. Experience has shown us that with this guidance, on average, 80 percent of cows voluntarily go to the milking system within two weeks.

During start-up, the prior preparation and knowledge transfer is put into practice so that everything runs smoothly with the cows and the feeding strategy. Feeding is not only important for automatic milking, but for the initiation of the Lely Vector automatic feeding system as well.

Along with your feed advisor, we take a close look at aspects such as the feed composition, order of loading and mixing times. By doing this, we assure you that the prepared ration is correctly served at the feed fence.

After start-up

Even after start-up, we continue to offer you as much guidance and support as you need. Together, we look at your personal goals and what you want to concentrate on in the future. We monitor progress via a number of systems that we have at our disposal. We also pay regular visits to your farm and organize trainings with other dairy producers. In this way, we all continue to learn from and with one another.

Of course, we are always interested in knowing how happy you are with our products and whether there are any improvements with which we could help. We stay in touch with you to help you achieve a sustainable, profitable and enjoyable future on your farm, in line with your goals.

‘The overall health, breeding and milk production of our herd has vastly improved.’

Acting locally

With international knowledge

We offer trained and certified FMS personnel locally. FMS advisors are able to tell you everything you need to know about managing and optimizing your herd, barn, workload and efficiency in your day-to-day routine.

However, your local advisor does not work alone. The knowledge of an international team sustains the local advisors. This means that you can reap the full benefits of our worldwide expertise in the area of automatic milking and/or feeding, combined with our local knowledge of laws and regulations, weather conditions, and geographical factors. We work closely with your vet, feed advisor and other consultants.

The combination of working together with your advisors, physical (barn) observations, information from our management systems and your own expertise, serves to optimize your farm’s performance by allowing your cows to reach their individual potential.

By pooling our experience to work as a team, we achieve the best possible results for you and your farm, in line with your goals. This is something we offer to all of our customers worldwide, from new dairy producers to those who have worked with us for years.
