Denis and Dermot Hickey (pictured left) are a father and son partnership farming on the Cork side of the border village of Rathmore. The Open Day discussion will be around the Lely Astronauts A5 and how the family came to the decision to go automated.
In 2018 the family were milking 70 cows on a 10 unit milking parlour. When the time came to upgrade, Denis and Dermot looked at all options available to them. With a very tight grazing block of 23 hectares, they wanted to maximise grass and production.

The Lely Astronaut A5 is the new milestone in automatic milking. It's an evolution that incorporates everything we have learnt over the past 25 years since we invented automatic milking. We looked at our cows, we listened to our customers and we stuck to proven practices, but we also completely redesigned every part of the system.
