New entrant webinar
Converting to dairy for 2025
Converting to dairy for 2025
Based outside of Tullamore in Co. Offaly. Stephen McQuade, was a new entrant to dairy in spring 2022, starting with 70 heifers on one robot. He had excellent performance in year one with 443kg milk solids sold per cow. In year two he put in a second robot and increased to 103 cows, with another 40 heifers joining the herd. Excellent grassland management on an ABC grazing system saw the young herd sell 506kg milk solids per cow in year two. As part of the webinar we will talk to Stephen about his journey over the past two years running a robotic milking system.
Liam Cahill from Lakeland Dairies will describe the process to take if you want to become a dairy entrant in 2025. He will also inform us about the support available along the way.

Managing 530 cows on a grass based system with 8 Lely Robots over 2 units.
Since converting their 2 dairies from a 30 unit and 20 unit parlours to a 5 & 3 Robot systems, the Callan Family have reduced the labour requirement on their dairy business by 2 labour units and increased milk solid production by 100 kgs per cow.
Father and son duo Conor and Niall Molony from outside Thurles in Co. Tipperary were existing dairy farmers milking 170 cows on a spring calving grass-based system through a herringbone parlour. In spring 2019 the farm made the change to robotic milking. Now entering their third year with Lely robots Conor and Niall will talk through how they are maximising the two robots and the reason they decided to make the change.
Watch HereHenry and Robert Mulligan from Co Meath installed six Lely robots on their farm in September 2019 to milk their herd of over 400 cows. The farmers held a virtual open day on their farm to give their honest opinion of the system to date. If you are interested in developing a similar system contact the team at Lely Center Mullingar.
Watch HereJack Madigan from Co. Kilkenny converted to dairying in 2020 with the installation of a Lely Astronaut A5. The farm started off with 70 heifers, half of which were Fleckvieh heifers imported from Austria. Keeping building costs to a minimum and making the best use out of the existing shed were key considerations for the farmyard design team on this project. Jack will outline his experiences of the system to date and share his advice for anyone thinking of going down the robotic milking route.

• Installation
• Grazing plan
• Start up experience
• Lessons learnt so far
Derek O'Halleran was a new dairy entrant in spring 2020. Due to the fragmented nature of his land, a grazing system was not an option for the farm, so it was decided to develop an indoor robotic milking system with a high yielding herd. Hoof health is vital to the success of the system with a Lely Discovery Collector installed to ensure passages in the shed are kept clean at all times.
Watch HerePeter Anderson from Co Kildare converted to dairying in spring 2019, installing a Lely A5 to milk his 64 heifers on a grass-based system. In spring 2020 he installed his second Lely A5 and increased numbers to 100 cows with an average production of 490kg of milk solids. For 2021 he aims to milk 130 cows on the system. Peter will outline how the system has worked for the farm to date and how the information he gets from his robots helps him to make daily management decisions.
Watch HereThis webinar gives an in depth look into the new Lely Horizon farm management system which combines individual cow data from your Lely equipment, with third party information into one single app.
As part of the webinar, Donal Lynch from XLVETS talks you through the information that is available to vets from the robots and how he uses this information when it comes to selective dry cow therapy. He goes through best practice when it comes to drying off a cow.
Watch HereThe team at Lely Center Mullingar examine in-depth; the options farmers have when looking at a robotic scraper for their yard. The Lely Discovery and Lely Discovery Collector offer unrivalled flexibility when it comes to cleaning both solid and slatted areas within sheds and farmyards.
Learn how these machines work and what they are capable of doing. You will also get the opportunity to hear from local farmers on their experience of these products
The webinar will also focus on the Lely Juno automatic feed pusher and the potential benefits that can be seen by more regular pushing up of feed such as increased feeding times and therefore production.
In addition, the Lely Calm automatic calf feeding system will be discussed and the many labour saving and calf performance benefits they bring to calf rearing.
