Whipp’s new green-built robotic dairy marks a confident step forward

Nothern Victoria, Australia - The Whipp family has taken a bold step into the future of dairy farming with the installation and a successful start-up of two new Lely Astronaut A5 milking robots.

A new dairy designed for future growth

Milking around 200 cows, the Whipps have designed their new dairy with long-term growth in mind, with plans to expand to six milking robots when all cows from their existing dairy are fully relocated to the new farm location

At the moment, each paddock on their new dairy has feed bins providing a partially mixed ration (PMR), while the robots supply additional concentrates. The plan is to eventually feed a consistent PMR along a feed pad to help ensure consistent feed intake.

Other automatic devices, like the Juno feed pusher and Calm calf feeder were also said to be part of the Whipp family’s future plan.

Motivated by the success of their first dairy operation, the Whipps set out to create a system that would support better cow health and reduce labour. Another key factor in their choice of Lely was the availability, reliability, and hands-on involvement of local service throughout planning, installation, and training.

The start-up was remarkably smooth. Despite being new to the system, the cows adapted quickly, responding well to the calm environment and consistent routine. The dairy’s thoughtful design has contributed to the easy transition.

The Whipp family’s new site represents more than a technological upgrade, it shows confidence in the future of dairy farming, where automation and animal welfare go hand in hand.
