Discover the influence of a feed pusher and a milking robot at your farm

Introduction
Feed pusher and milking robot, a golden combination
Did you know that stimulating feed intake and increased cow activity not only saves valuable time but also helps boost milk production? Curious how that works? We have done the research for you and investigated the influence of having a feed pusher and a milking robot at your farm.
The result? Farms using an automated milking machine in combination with a feed pusher, experience on average higher milk yields, more frequent milking visits, and fewer refusals. A truly golden combination at your farm*.
Research
More frequent milking visits
Internal research* by Lely shows that farms using both the Lely Astronaut milking robot and the Lely Juno feed pusher experience, on average, higher milk yields, more frequent milking visits, and fewer refusals.
Your challenge, our motivation
When we take today's challenges in consideration, we understand you are looking for ways to handle fluctuating milk yields and labour challenges, while keeping your cows as healthy as possible. Its our motivation to find out what could work best for you. Therefore we conducted desk research.
01
We have done the research for you
internal data desk research among (*) Lely farmers compared their performances based on data of Horizon, their management program. The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of feed pushing on the performance of the Astronaut milking system. And the results pay off.
02
The key results
Higher milk production, more milking visits per animal per day and less refusal at the milking robot. In this way, automatic feed pushing becomes even more beneficial. It's the combination of free cow traffic and frequently pushed feed that can stimulate ingestion and cow activity. This way, you can save valuable time and increase milk production at the same time.

Research results
Increase your milk production
Frequently pushing feed has a positive impact on the ingestion level of the animal. A feed pusher assures feed is within reach at the feed fence during the day supporting the cow's own routine. A clear benefit in itself. But there is more. Whenever a cow presents herself at the feed fence, feed is always available and within reach and therefore the amount of necessary nutrients to produce milk increases as well.

Research results
Stimulate visits to the milking robot
The effect of frequent feed pushing is that the cow is more active spread over the day. Cows can go and eat at their own rhythm which positively influences the visit behaviour to the milking robot as well. Typically, a Juno feed pusher has a positive impact on the number of milking visits per cow per day.

Research results
Less refusals per animal per day
Due to an increased milk production cows obtain a higher acceptance rate to be milked. The research result shows less refusal for farms with a Juno feed pusher. However, refusal is usually more influenced by the settings than the changed behaviour.
